A Quick Guide to Overseeding

Overseeding is the process of spreading new grass over an existing lawn. Its main goal is to encourage newer and thicker growth, which could better withstand drought, diseases and insects.

Learn the basics of overseeding as Backyard Reflections, one of the area’s top outdoor living contractors, shares more information in this post.

Why You Should Consider Overseeding

The grass in your yard may get damaged due to various reasons and need to be replaced eventually. Overseeding is an excellent choice for homeowners whose lawns have been damaged. It is considered an effective yet inexpensive way to bring your lawn back to its healthiest state without starting from scratch.

How to Overseed

  • Landscape services providers recommend starting the process by mowing your lawn. Trim your grass shorter than usual and bag the clippings. You can rake the yard after to help loosen the top layer of soil. This is also helpful in removing dead grass and debris.
  • Choose the right seed for your lawn conditions and aerate your yard before overseeding. Then, you can utilize a spreader to speed up the process and ensure the seeds are distributed evenly. This approach, however, works best if you use bluegrass.
  • One of the crucial parts of overseeding is watering. After scattering the seeds, make sure to water them right away. The initial watering should be thorough, but on the succeeding ones, you can use less water. It can take up to two weeks for the seeds to sprout.

When to Overseed

If you live in the North, the best time to seed your lawn is in the fall. During this season, the soil is still warm, and the air is colder. If you are unable to seed during this time of the year, spring is your next best option. If you’re in the South, the ideal season to seed is in late spring to mid-summer since warm-season grasses require higher soil temperature to grow.
