When planting a dense, fast-growing privacy hedge in Minnesota, it is important to consider whether the plants are strong enough to survive cold, freezing winters. Here, outdoor living contractors share some evergreens and deciduous plants that will work well as living privacy fences.

1. Lilac. The common lilac is a premier choice for a privacy hedge because it produces a hardy, dense bush. It is also suitable for growing throughout the North Star State. In order to produce their beautiful spring flowers, lilacs favor well-drained soil and full sun. Be sure to prune them each year during the spring season after they finish blooming.

2. Nanking Cherry. Plant Nanking cherries at least three to four feet apart for your property protection. With a dense, twiggy growth habit, these plants will grow from six to 10 feet tall and spread an equal distance from each other. Their fruits are also good for making pies, jams, and jellies. Although Nanking cherries are considered short-lived shrubs, they can survive winter in Minnesota and have a lifespan of around 20 years, according to landscape services.

3. Pyramidal Arborvitae. This plant can grow to a mature height of 40 to 50 feet but can be maintained at a lower height if pruned on a regular basis. Arborvitae prefers rich, moist soil and full sun, and is often planted near foundations since they are tolerant of alkaline soil.

4. Boxwood. Boxwood plants are dense, evergreen shrubs. They make great ornamental hedges and can provide privacy year-round. Its thick, fine-textured foliage goes from medium to dark green. This plant also produces cream-colored blossoms in the spring months.
